Seller: clovis6mwh (2,325) 100%, Location: Woodbridge, VA, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 223235801765 A new LITHIC CAST replica from Occoquan Paleotechnics LLC, molded from the original artifact sent to Occpaleo in 2015. This represents a Lower Paleolithic Hand Axe from Suffolk, England. The original was made out of flint, and measures 115mm long. It shows the classic Acheulean style, and is approximately 500,000 years old. This Hand Axe was loaned to Occpaleo from the Slade collection in England. It was found in the South Acre Pit in 1999, where a great archaeological history of Paleolithic finds have been made. Hand axes represent the longest running tool type in human history, and even now are still steeped in mystery. They show some of the first attempts at symmetry in human art, and have at least two functions as tools. There are many theories about how they were used, but most archaeologists agree that they provided usable sharp cutting flakes as a portable core, and other uses might have included digging, animal processing, and the cutting/chopping of wood saplings/trees for shelter poles and weapons. (cast copyright Occpaleo 2015) It is cast is modern epoxy, which is much stronger than the plaster of previous generation casts, and picks up all the smallest details, including microscopic usewear. Buyer is to pay $3 shipping fixed and international buyers are to pay $22 shipping fixed. Check out my other items!
